Waipi’o Valley Hike (North End of Island)

Waipiʻo Valley is one of the most breathtaking and culturally significant landscapes on the Big Island. Located along the island’s lush northeastern coast, the valley is known for its towering green cliffs, waterfalls, black sand shoreline, and deep sense of natural beauty. For Hale Mele guests interested in experiencing a different side of Hawaiʻi beyond the sunny Kohala Coast, the Waipiʻo Valley overlook offers an unforgettable day trip filled with dramatic scenery and quiet moments of reflection.

About the Experience

Located in the Hamakua District about 1 to 1.5 hours from Hale Mele, Waipiʻo Valley stretches roughly a mile wide and six miles deep, with steep cliff walls rising nearly 2,000 feet above the valley floor. The overlook at the rim provides one of the island’s most iconic panoramic views, where guests can take in the lush valley below, the black sand beach at the ocean’s edge, and the powerful natural beauty that makes this area so special.

The overlook itself is easy to access from the parking area and does not require a reservation, permit, or tour. For many visitors, simply standing at the lookout and taking in the scenery is one of the highlights of their Big Island stay.

Access to the valley floor, however, is currently restricted. Following safety concerns related to rockfall and slope instability, Waipiʻo Valley Road remains closed to independent visitor access. At this time, visitors may only reach the valley floor through an approved guided tour service.

Camping permits remain suspended, and hiking trails into the valley are currently closed to visitors. Guests planning to visit are encouraged to check for the latest county updates before making the drive.
